Nearly 3 years later....this is what those bushes look like now.
They have never looked better!!
John worked on them all day...towards the end he ran into some trouble with one of the roots, and our neighbor Mark came over to help.
Now, while this is a huge improvement over what it looked like yesterday, we need some major landscaping help! Any suggestions on what to do here?

Wow! What a difference. Just think how great the house will look with new landscaping.
Your home is so cute! Since you didn't like the shrubs (do you know what they were?), why not plant some perennials or if you like gardening every year, do some annuals to add some color. Or if you want some type of shrubs again, how about some burning bushes? They're so pretty, especially in the fall. We have 2 in by our front porch & I love them. Can't wait to see a pic when you're all done :)
I would say add some colorful flowers or shrubs. A favorite here in Arizona is Oleander with light pink flowers. And I think the other kind we have a lot of here are Ruella...a dark purple. But I can't remember if that's the name.
go up to your favorite nursery and browse their selection. we found some really cool things this way.
